The Bible teaches us to love our neighbors as ourselves and to help those in need. Jesus himself set the example of serving others, and His teachings are full of encouragement to do the same. But what are the benefits of helping others in the Bible? Here are just a few of the many ways that serving and loving others can enrich our lives and our faith.

We show love to God

In Matthew 25:40, Jesus says, “Truly I tell you, whatever you did for one of the least of these brothers and sisters of mine, you did for me.” When we help others, we are showing love to God by serving His people. We are also fulfilling the second greatest commandment, to love our neighbors as ourselves (Mark 12:31).

We become more like Christ

In Philippians 2:5-7, Paul encourages us to have the same mindset as Christ, who “made himself nothing by taking the very nature of a servant.” When we serve others, we are following Christ’s example of humility and putting the needs of others above our own.

We experience joy and fulfillment

Acts 20:35 says, “It is more blessed to give than to receive.” When we help others, we often find that we receive blessings in return. We experience the joy of seeing others’ needs met, and we feel fulfilled knowing that we have made a difference in someone’s life.

We build relationships

In Matthew 6:19-20, Jesus says, “Do not store up for yourselves treasures on earth, where moths and vermin destroy, and where thieves break in and steal. But store up for yourselves treasures in heaven, where moths and vermin do not destroy, and where thieves do not break in and steal.” When we serve others, we are laying up treasure in heaven and investing in eternal rewards that will never fade away.
